Speaking up for the Cup

NEWS  SENIOR SCHOOL , ENGLISH

Congratulations to all the Upper Four girls who took part in the final of this year's Monachan Memorial Trophy competition.

This spectacular trophy is awarded for public speaking, with the girls preparing speeches on a topic of their choice to deliver to the whole year group - and an external adjudicator.

This year the six finalists, two from each form, were Sapphire Brewer-Marchant, Klara Lee, Aimee Helyar, Charlotte Perry, Grainne Wrigley and Amy Shaw. They gave talks on topics ranging from 'Animal Cruelty' to whether we should say 'scon' or 'scone' - and they were all absolutely excellent.

Our thanks go to Mr King who did the judging for us and from such a strong field managed to pick on just one winner: Aimee Helyar, whose speech on 'Reach for your Dreams' was thoroughly engaging and expressively delivered. As well as the trophy, Aimee received a cash prize of £100 donated by the competition benefactor Mrs Noi Monachan.

Public speaking is a key skill and I'm delighted the Upper Four, and their English teachers, are already such confident practitioners. Well done!

Ms Riches
