Tag Rugby Tournament 2016

NEWS  MELROSE , PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Melrose entered 3 teams in the annual tag rugby tournament at Footes Lane on Saturday 19th March 2016. 42 Island teams from all the local schools turned out to brave the icy conditions.

Representing Years 3 and 4 were Melrose Lailie's Limas . For many of them this was their first rugby festival. They were amazed by the speed and ferocity of some of the other teams but soon learned from them and their games showed great improvement throughout out the day. Thanks to Lailie Platt Ransom and her father for managing and coaching this team.

Melrose Duidin's Dragons and Melrose Morris' Monsters represented Years 5 and 6. They played fine, spirited rugby all day and certainly more than held their own against the other island teams (most other teams had just the statutory one female player and the rest were boys). Unfortunately the teams had to compete against each other in the first knockout round of the Plate play offs. The Monsters narrowly defeated the Dragons and then went on to beat the Forest School in the semi- finals to secure themselves a place in the finals against The Vale Vipers. After an outstanding game of rugby which officials declared one of the best they had ever seen, The Vipers won by 6 tries to 4. In fact after the game, I was asked to encourage our girls to enrol in full contact rugby as the officials felt that we have some players of island standard!

A huge thanks to all the players, their families and supporters from school who helped with the teams.
