Senior School Spring Concert

NEWS  SENIOR SCHOOL , MUSIC

Every March the music department celebrates music making in the annual Spring Concert. An enjoyable evening and this year was no exception.

Our Junior Choir set the tone for the evening with the performances of Rutter’s ‘All things Bright and Beautiful’ and the well known Beatles hit ‘Penny Lane’. Actions and props included!

Throughout the evening we were gifted beautiful solo work from across the year groups. Lucia, in Remove, performed ‘Crystal Spring’ on the violin and Lily, also in Remove, performed ‘I’ll bid my heart be still’ on the viola. String solos were closely followed by two vocal performances from Megan, in Upper four and Lexie in Upper Five.

The Junior Motet performed a fantastic setting of ‘Ave Maria’ by Caccini and ‘I will Sing with the Spirit’ by Rutter. Flossy and Heather in Lower Five performed their solos closely followed by Helena in Upper Six where she performed ‘Song till Lotta’ on the trombone.

The Senior String Orchestra took to the stage and performed ‘Brook Green Suite’ by Holst. This was an unconducted performance but led by Julia and Molly, they directed the orchestra fantastically.

In our 150th year we have been working with the composer Amy Summers. The commission ‘Do what is Right Come What May’ is taken from our school motto and throughout the song the lyrics reflect on Guernsey and students past and present at The Ladies’ College. The Junior and Senior Motet choirs most recently perform this at the Jubilee Ball and treated us to another well sung performance.

After the interval Loophole performed two of their entries into this years Battle of the Bands. A band of students from Lower and Upper Four rehearse every Wednesday with Mr Mahy from Thirst. The audience were treated to brilliant performances of ‘X’s and O’s’ and ‘Payphone’.

This was closely followed by the Senior Wind Band and their performance of ‘Mais Mineur’ and solos from Lara in Upper Four, Molly in Upper Five and Genevieve in Upper Six. The senior choir performed ‘A Flower Remembered’ and ‘Fly me to the Mood’.

The audience were gifted a treat of ‘Ave Maria’ by Rachmaninoff led by Mr Henderson and the Chancel Choir at the organ and then the Senior Motet swiftly performed their pieces ‘Ombra Mai Fu’ and ‘Blackbird’.

As is tradition we bid farewell to our Upper Six musicians and they received their egg cup and egg. This is always a small token of our appreciation but one where we hope they remember their time with us in the music department and their years of music making.

Instrumentalists and members of the choirs joined forces to perform ‘Sing’ which was written for the 60th Jubilee in 2012. A celebration of song to round off what was a truly fantastic evening.

We are delighted there is so much talent and willingness to perform, as the concert was packed and bursting two concerts will be scheduled next term. Thank you to everyone who took part and helped to ensure the evening was a huge success.
