An Interview with Tom Fletcher CMG on Education, AI, and the Future
"I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Fletcher CMG as part of The Ladies’ College Big Debate 2024. Tom Fletcher is the former Principal of Hertford College, Oxford, and has recently accepted a position as Under-Secretary in charge of the UN’s global humanitarian mission.
As Lead Senior Prefect for Voice this year, I have come to fully appreciate the importance of highlighting all voices and opinions in a changing world. It was incredibly interesting to ask Tom questions about our education system and the challenges it is currently facing.
Reading ‘Ten Survival Skills for World in Flux’, authored by Tom, in preparation for this interview illustrated the struggles our generation will face with the development of Artificial Intelligence, and how skills once considered essential are now becoming less vital.
As a former UK Ambassador and Foreign Policy Advisor at No. 10, it was incredibly valuable to hear Tom’s thoughts on how we can educate and support others through these changes, and whether it is realistic to hope for government support and meaningful change. What I learned from this interview will be extremely valuable as we continue implementing Voice Prefect team’s action plan for 2024-2025. "
