Drama
“All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances, And one man in his time plays many parts” William Shakespeare
At Melrose, we prepare our girls for life's stage from a very early age, using drama to provide them with the unique opportunity to develop their imagination, self-confidence, teamwork and communication skills, all of which will prove invaluable skills in their future lives.
Drama develops through role play in the Pre-Prep and Prep departments and then through timetabled weekly drama lessons in the Junior Department. We are fortunate to have our own stage so that girls from as young as 2 ½ can develop their confidence through performance. These take the form of Nativities in the Pre-Prep and Preparatory Departments and full scale musical productions in the Junior Department. The older girls are encouraged to experience all elements of staging a production fulfilling roles both on and backstage. Past productions have included The Wizard Of Oz, The Jungle Book and Alice.
The school also has a very popular drama club which encourages all girls, whatever their ability, to get up on stage, perform and, above all, have fun!
In addition, all classes have a chance to develop their group skills in the LAMDA performance exams in Choral Speaking which are held in the Trinity Term and in which the girls gain first class results.
