Drama
“Shakespeare is the true multicultural author. He exists in all languages. He is put on the stage everywhere. Everyone feels that they are represented by him on the stage.” Harold Bloom
The Department’s aim is to foster a love of Drama and Theatre arts and instil in students some invaluable future-ready skills, whatever their chosen academic or career path. Students develop confidence and the importance of excellent communication skills and teamwork, along with problem-solving, public speaking and creativity. Throughout Key Stage 3, students will develop and build on these essential skills, as well as having the opportunity to enhance their physical and vocal skills and explore key moments from theatrical history. GCSE Drama is a very popular choice and once in which students have the opportunity to explore key theatre practitioners and their techniques – putting them into practice, with a satisfying sense of creative freedom. At A-level, this is further developed, with additional practitioners explored in greater depth and a students exploring a wide range of texts – from theory into practice.
All students are introduced to international playwrights and theatre practitioners presenting a wider world view, opening up discussion and evaluation of provocative philosophies, themes and issues.
The Drama Department provide the opportunity for all students at The Ladies’ College to perform in whole school productions – most recently, these have included: Grease, Beauty and The Beast, Little Shop of Horrors, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Romeo and Juliet. Each production offers the chance to be involved on or back-stage and provides students with a unique opportunity to work closely with those from other year groups, making new friends in a fun and creative environment.
This academic year sees ‘Fame’ explode onto the stage at the Princess Royal Centre for Performing Arts in January 2022! Tickets will go on sale later this year and are sure to sell quickly, judging by the last several shows, which have all been sell-out successes.
In all Drama sessions students are encouraged to work harmoniously in a creative ensemble and as independent learners. A sense of creative play is hugely encouraged and a safe place is created, led by our experienced and enthusiastic staff, in which mistakes can be made without worry, and where students can challenge themselves, in order for them to be the very best they can be.
