Young Enterprise allows groups of students from across Guernsey to form companies and offers individuals the chance to take on key roles with different responsibilities within these. Students learn eight key employability competencies through involvement in the scheme. These skills are: communication, confidence, financial capability, initiative, organisation, problem solving, resilience and teamwork.
The local advisor and coordinator, Kate Lenfesty, gave a presentation to Lower Sixth in September last year. She explained the benefits of taking part in the group activity to make items or provide a service, along with students from other schools and colleges in the island. 15 of our students took part this year and joined 3 of the 4 local companies. Each company set up a stand and presented to an audience of friends, families and advisors on 30 April at Beau Sejour, outlining their Young Enterprise Business. The awards were as follows;
Pamplemousse won the prestigious HSBC Award for Best Company as well as the Guernsey Electricity Award for Best Product Sales. This company will represent Guernsey in the South East Regional Finals.
Epsilon won the Sure Award for Best Company Presentation.
Company One won the ICSA Award for Best Administered Company and the Partnership Award for IT Innovation.
Special mention to two of our students – Heather Despres and Freya McClaren- who each won a Sure Award for Achiever of the year.
We are proud of the achievements of all those involved and pleased that they gained so much from this opportunity. We would encourage future Sixth Form students to get involved when the opportunity presents itself to them in the future.
