House Music rounds-off the Lent term and, as ever, this year's competition gave us an eclectic playlist with which to start the holiday.
There are three rounds (Pop Song, Instrumental, and Choir) and they give the Houses scope to try plenty of different musical styles. We heard performances ranging from de Saumarez's David Bowie tribute (Amy Bould's a cappella arrangement of Space Oddity), to Durand's pared down version of the first movement of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony.
Each House acquitted themselves well, with de Sausmarez coming out on top. Their success was due in no small measure to the excellent vocal arrangements made especially by Amy Bould and Olivia Younger for this year's competition. Other highlights included a beautifully balanced account of I can't help falling in love with you from Carey and Brock's instrumental version of the theme from Game of thrones. As with all the House events, it was encouraging to see so much teamwork across age groups in College.
There's a bittersweet element to House Music as it's the last musical event of the year for the Upper Sixth. Amie Le Feuvre of Durand House said; I am very sad that I have had my last House Music as it is always a personal highlight in the calendar and I hope all the current and future participants will have as much fun as we did this year.
