'What's that sound?'

NEWS  MELROSE , SCIENCE

Form I have been having a whale of a time immersing themselves in their current Science topic 'What's that sound?' Loaded up with instruments, measuring equipment and clipboards the girls made their way to the Senior School field, in the beautiful autumnal sunshine, to work hard on developing their investigation skills. The girls worked in pairs to design their own investigation into the effect of distance on sound, ensuring it was a 'fair test' and had a good idea of how to record their results. They are becoming much more adept at recording results methodically and accurately, with a bit of fun thrown in along the way! We had a fantastic class discussion about external factors that could affect our results, such as the wind and noise from the traffic. The conclusions they drew from their investigations were intuitive and showed further development of their scientific skills and understanding. I am not sure about their suggested extension activity... they wanted to investigate how far away I would need to go before they couldn't hear me any more! Mrs Walkington suggested The Bridge! Cheeky monkeys!!!!
